Ceruloplasmin is a protein produced by the liver that binds copper for transport in the blood. Decreased production of this protein causes copper to be deposited in body tissues such as the brain, liver, corneas and kidneys. This test is used in conjunction with serum copper to evaluate Wilson’s disease. It is also used in the evaluation of chronic active hepatitis, cirrhosis and other liver disease.
Fasting is not required for this test. Always take your medications as prescribed. Do not take supplements the day of the test.
