What Is Cholesterol?
Cholesterol is a solid waxy substance that enables cell membranes to maintain their integrity and provide an insulation shield around nerve fibers. In order to be transported in the bloodstream, cholesterol must be attached to carrier molecules. The liver manufactures two types of carrier molecules: LDL (low density lipoprotein) and HDL (high density lipoprotein).
LDL molecules carry cholesterol from the liver out to repair damaged body cells, including those of the artery walls. HDL molecules transport cholesterol from body tissues back to the liver for disposal, removing excess fat and cholesterol from the bloodstream.
