MSM Powder

  • • Methylsulphonylmethane
  • • Joint Sulfur
  • • For Connective Tissue
  • • For Healthy Cartilage*
  • • Vegetarian Product

MSM (Methylsulphonylmethane) is a natural form of organic sulfur found in all living organisms.  This natural compound, researched since 1979, provides the chemical links needed to form and maintain numerous different types of tissues found in the human body, including connective tissue such as articular cartilage.*  While MSM is a natural componenet of almost all fresh fruits, vegetables, seafood and meat, food-processing methods reduce sulfur levels, making supplementation more important than ever.

NOW® MSM is tested to contain a minimum 99.7% purity.

What is MSM?

Methyl-sulfonyl-methane (MSM) is a naturally occurring sulfur compound found in our bodies as well as in many common beverages and foods, including milk, coffee, tea and green vegetables. In its purified chemical form, it is an odorless, essentially tasteless, white, water-soluble crystalline solid. It is one of the safest substances in biology, similar in toxicity to water.

* MSM contains 34% elemental sulfur, by weight.

* MSM is a non-animal-based nutritional supplement and is an all-natural source of MSM.

Naturally-occurring sulfur, such as that found in MSM, is not similar to inorganic sulfides, sulfites and sulfates to which many people are allergic. In other words, people who are allergic to sulfa drugs will not normally react to MSM or dietary sulfur.

Where does NOW® Foods MSM powder come from?

The cycle of MSM begins in the ocean where microscopic plants called plankton release sulfur compounds. These salts are transformed in the ocean water into the very volatile compound dimethyl sulfide (DMS) which escapes from the ocean as a gas. DMS rises into the upper atmosphere, and in the presence of ozone and high-energy ultraviolet light, is converted into MSM. MSM is derived from an all-natural source of DMS that originates in pine trees. MSM is produced by twice oxidizing DMS to form DMSO2 , otherwise known as MSM. Unlike the DMS, MSM is very soluble in water, and returns to earth in the form of rain. On earth, plants take MSM into their root systems and concentrate it. MSM and the sulfur it contains is incorporated into the plants' structure. Through the plants' metabolism, MSM, along with other sulfur compounds it has spawned, is ultimately mineralized and transported back to the sea.

I have been using NOW products for some time and actually was using MSM because of LINGUISIL being used in it. MY last purchase did not use this term. Has the ingredient changed?

Linguisil MSM is no longer available as the trademark has been voided. We have removed the term from all of our newer labels, though products still labeled as such will contain it. The MSM we are using now is of equally high quality from the same producer. We have not changed our strict specifications.

Using this product daily helps my osteoarthritis of the knees dramatically. There is a dintinct difference when I don't use it. I add the powder to hot water (about 6 oz) in the morning and drink it. It doesn't taste great - but the results are worth it. I don't like taking capsules, and prefer the powder.
