Diabetes is classified into 2 types: Type I diabetes is caused primarily by insulin deficiency from dysfunction of pancreatic 5-cells and it represents less than 20% of all cases of diabetes.
Type II diabetes represents more than 80% (more than 16 millions in the U.S. alone and some 250 million worldwide) and it is estimated 40 to 45% of people over 65 years old are at risk.
In many Type II cases, insulin deficiency is not a primary problem but peripheral (muscle and fat tissues) insulin resistance is a major factor. In other words. Type II diabetes is glucose intolerance. Therefore, the treatment for the patients with Type II diabetes relies mainly on how to overcome insulin resistance. The drugs used to enhance the insulin sensitivity for this type of diabetes have many adverse side effects, especially on kidneys and liver.
Research started at Georgetown University in Washington DC. and New York Medical College, Valhalla, NY. in 1997 discovered an active compound (another beta-glucan) in the Maitake mushroom called X-fraction. This X-fraction, according to their studies, would weaken the insulin resistance and consequently enhance insulin sensitivity.
Searching for a better compound, Cun Zhuang, Ph.d., Chief Researcher at Maitake Products, developed an improved method to successfully fractionate and identify another active compound from Maitake, named SX-Fraction. Studies on SX-Fraction have been conducted at Georgetown University and New York Medical College respectively over the last two years. The results show that SX-Fraction does indeed possess a more potent ability to enhance insulin sensitivity for controlling blood sugar levels and lowering blood pressure than X-fraction.
This is truly good news for those who suffer from Type II diabetes or for those who would like to prevent it.

In preparation for surgery my fasting blood sugar was found to be 217. I was devistated as very few people in my family had type II diabetes. Since my PCP had already cleared me for surgery & the surgeon was not overly concerned about the 217 blood sugar, I desided to start looking for homeopathic diabetes treatments. I knew there was a medication from China that I could order but being sceptical about our recent Chinese imports I was hoping for another alternative. I found Maitake SX-fraction in a health food magazine. I checked it out on the internet & ordered one bottle of 90 tablets. I started taking the tablets a few days post-op from my sinsus surgery. 2 weeks post-op my blood sugar is down from 144-6 to 127. It decreases several points daily. I am still trying to maintain healthy eating: protein, carbs, some fats, fruits & vegies. In the next few weeks I hope to incorporate exercise again.
