Red Yeast Rice is a unique natural product native to China thatís been used in Asian traditional medical systems since approximately 800 A.D.
A 12 week, double-blind study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition looked at the possible effects of Chinese red-yeast-rice on lowering cholesterol.† The study was conducted using 83 people with hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol), with an average total cholesterol of 252.5 mg/dL.† None of the test subjects were taking cholesterol lowering drugs.† Test subjects were given either a placebo or 2,400 mg per day of red yeast rice, and a diet consisting of 30% fat (10% saturated) and no more than 300 mg cholesterol per day. After 12 weeks the group receiving the placebo dropped their average total cholesterol by 4.6 mg/dL (1.8%) and their average LDL cholesterol by 4.6 mg/dL (2.6%).† The group receiving 2,400 mg of red yeast rice per day dropped their average total cholesterol by 40.2 mg/dL (16.1%) and their average LDL cholesterol by 37.9 mg/dL (21.9%).† HDL cholesterol was not significantly effected in either group.† Neither group reported significant side effects.† To view the entire report (I recommend reading the discussion section toward the bottom), click here.
